What is safety glass?
Safety glass is a phrase used to describe glass that, when broken, provides a level of safety for the people in the vicinity. There are two types of safety glass.
Laminated safety glass (which is simply two pieces of glass laminated together) most commonly seen in shop fronts ranges from 5.38mm to 12.38mm in the clear form which includes all standard thicknesses and are as follows: 5.38mm, 6.38mm, 8.38mm & 12.38mm. These thicknesses are also available in there tinted form with only the most common tints being grey & green held in stock. We also stock 6.76mm obscure laminated safety glass in a stock sheet that also measures 1840mm x in height x 2140mm in width.
Toughened safety glass will break into many small piece and usually fall out. Toughened glass but must be made to exact measurements, so there is a wait of 5 working days from the day we place the order. So if time is the issue and not cost laminated glass will be the best option.
We also stock a variety of obscure (non see through) glass that is held in stock and is only available in 3mm, 4mm, 5mm & 6mm (for more information see decorative glass page) Obscure glass sheet sizes that are generally handled are 1840mm in height x 2140mm in width.
It must be noted that some of the patterns are directional and when matching to existing panels and that over the years some patterns also have been redefined in their manufacturing.
Translucent glass is also available in both laminated form (2440 x 3660mm) and in float form -Matelux at 2440 x 3300mm.
Opti-white or Starfire glass which is a Low E glass (sheet size 2440 x 3300mm) is also available and is typically used for splash backs where exact colour matching is a priority.
